Mission
The Mission of the JCDH Green Loop Initiative is to promote awareness of environmentally friendly practices, such as composting, within the industries regulated by JCDH. To accomplish this mission, JCDH will implement strategies to close the food waste loop and divert food from landfills in the Jefferson County community. These strategies will include innovative approaches to food life-cycle education, regulatory support and evaluation, resource assistance, and collaborations with subject matter experts, community leaders, and organizations.
Everyone can play a part in the Green Loop Initiative with the Three Rs!
-
Reduce
Reducing waste means minimizing the amount of organic material that enters landfills by making conscious decisions about consumption. By planning meals, buying only what you need, and consuming leftovers, you prevent unnecessary waste from ending up in the trash.
-
Reuse
Reusing focuses on finding new ways to use organic materials rather than discarding them. Things like certain kitchen scraps, lawn clippings, and plant debris can all be “reused” to nourish gardens and landscapes by composting them.
-
Rescue
Rescuing involves saving foods that are still safe to eat rather than throwing them in the garbage. For example, you can rescue a cooked hamburger and freeze it for use as an ingredient in another dish, such as stew or chili. Canned goods and dry packaged items also can be donated through food rescue programs.
