Parks, Trails & Green Spaces

JCDH recognizes the importance that the built environment, as a social determinant of health, plays in supporting healthy lifestyles. We have played a significant role in improving trails, parks, and other projects that have helped to enhance communities. Here are some initiatives that we have directly supported and reflect our commitment to creating sustainable and healthy environments for the community:

Establishment of Freshwater Land Trust’s Red Rock Trail System Master Plan and Red Rock Action Plan and assisting in the completion of over 100 miles of trails and greenways so far.

Support of the creation of the Jefferson County Greenways Commission responsible for maintenance and day-to-day operations at Ruffner Mountain, Red Mountain Park, and Turkey Creek Nature Preserve.

Support of the creation of Cool Green Trees to mitigate climate effects and flooding events by increasing the tree canopy in urban heat islands.
