Tobacco Prevention & Control

There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.

The Problem

  • Exposure to secondhand smoke is a serious public health hazard. Bartenders, waiters, musicians, chefs, housekeeping staff and blue collar workers alike continue to suffer from the health consequences of exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • New tobacco products, such as electronic smoking devices, have flooded the market and are serving as gateways to nicotine and other drug additions.
  • Smokefree policies are the only effective way to eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke.

The Solution

  • Equal smokefree protections for all workers.
  • Increased protections against secondhand smoke exposure through strong smokefree policies.

What is a comprehensive smokefree ordinance?

A comprehensive smokefree policy protects everyone from secondhand smoke exposure in all public places and workplaces, including offices, restaurants, bars, clubs, and hotels, as well as all outdoor seating and serving areas. The policy also includes a distance requirement for all entrances, operable windows, and air ventilation systems.
