Strategic National Stockpile (SNS)

The Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) is a collection of antibiotics, vaccines and other critical medical equipment and supplies maintained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with support from other agencies in the Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Government. During a natural or man-made disaster, the SNS will supplement and re-supply local health authorities that become overwhelmed by the crisis. Supplies are kept in various locations around the United States so that they can be delivered anywhere in the country within 12 hours of a request.

SNS supplies, antibiotics and antivirals have been sent out in response to the following events:
  • 9/11 Terrorist Attacks in New York City
  • October 2001 Anthrax Attacks
  • Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Superstorm Sandy
  • H1N1 Influenza 2009

JCDH Emergency Preparedness and Response works with the Jefferson County EMA and the Jefferson County Healthcare Coalition to plan, train and respond to an event that may require supplies from the Strategic National Stockpile.
